Running eLink through the Internet Explorer 7.0 browser.

Most eLink users run eLink through IE7, the main reason is that IE7 has ActiveX support and some of the more useful features of eLink (Document Merging, Query Wizard, etc) take advantage of this technology.

If your IE7 is running slowly it is reported that the following tweaks can make it run faster:

1.) Setting IE7 to use a fixed amount of space for it's temporary internet files (say between 50MB and 250MB). You can set this by going, in IE7, to Tools > Internet Options > Browsing History: Settings and changing the 'Disk space to use'.

2.) Automatically checking for RSS feeds is reported to slow IE7 performance. Most people don't use this feature (if you don't know what it is, you aren't using it), and you can turn this off by going to: Tools > Internet Options > Content > Feeds > Settings and then unchecking all the boxes.

3) Use of ClearType with IE7 has been reported to slow IE7 performance. You can disable Cleartype in IE7 by going to:
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced and then moving the slider tab on the right down until you see Always use ClearType for HTML*, at which point you can uncheck that option.

4) IE7 opens a maximum of 2 channels to a website, meaning that it can only download 2 files at a time. To increase the number of channels you can do the following:
  • Click on Start, select Run and then type regedit and open it.
  • Once you are in the registry editor, navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
  • Right click in the empty space, and create a new DWord (32-bit) value by choosing: New > DWord Value . Then name it: MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server (The 0 beside Server is a zero)
  • Double click this entry and modify the value to 3. (Substitute 3 for the preferred maximum number of downloads)
  • Create another DWord called: MaxConnectionsPerServer
  • Once again, double click this entry and modify the value to 3.
If you have Internet Explorer open, just restart it and you should be able to have more simultaneous downloads running.

Occasionally when you log in to eLink it returns with an error saying that it cannot find the Portal page. If you receive this error you have logged in as far as the server is concerned but you can't actually access any part of eLink. Generally this is caused by something blocking the eLink session cookie. You can confirm this by downloading an alternative browser such as Firefox and attempting to login that way, if it works in Firefox then the cause is probably fixable using one of the methods below:

The first thing to try is to verify that the eLink server is in the trusted sites (internet explorer security settings) and that cookies are allowed (internet explorer privacy settings).
Next, empty IE temporary files and cookies cache as well.
Finally, if neither of these work, it is worth checking that the date on your computer is set correctly. I had a user this morning whose computer date and time was set a month ahead, as soon as we had changed that to the correct time and date eLink worked correctly.
